In Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Mammootty stars as James, a Malayali traveller who stops a bus in an Indian village and transforms into Sundaram the local man. Their story is one of two very different men with little in common – other than their religious faith.

Despite its slow-paced arthouse style, this movie is well crafted and worth watching. The story is unique, and the cinematic experience is captivating; however, it can be a little pretentious at times.

2. Vaathi

Dhanush-starrer Vaathi, directed by Venky Atluri, follows the story of Bala Sir (Dhanush), as he battles against privatisation of education. The movie delves into why schools and colleges are being privatised, suggesting they lack commitment towards teaching students but instead aim solely at making profits.

The movie’s message on social equality is powerful and will resonate with viewers on an emotional level. Additionally, it features several powerful dialogues which are sure to leave a lasting impression.

The movie has an intriguing concept and is expertly executed with excellent screenplay, motivational dialogues and music. Dhanush and Samyuktha Menon’s chemistry on-screen is captivating; their visuals work seamlessly together.

3. Thalaikoothal

Thalaikoothal, a socially relevant movie that examines the practice of senicide, stars Samuthirakani, Kathir and Vasundhara. Directed by Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan, the film will be released on Netflix on March 3rd.

Pazhani, a young man searching for his missing father, finds himself caught between his wife and her relatives. They are unwilling to assist him in caring for his dad because they view him as an unnecessary burden on them.

Pazhani is determined not to let go of his dream in order to take care of his father and fight for his recovery. He takes action against those in his family who are using thalaikoothal as a means to kill off his beloved grandfather.

4. Iratta

If you enjoy thrillers, then Iratta is a must watch. Its storyline is captivating and its ending will leave you in awe.

Debutant director Rohit Krishnan’s film is a crime thriller that centers around twin brothers Vinod (Joju George) and Pramod, who work as cops. Their differences and similarities become the focus of an investigation.

Joju George’s performance as a double role is truly remarkable, and the screenplay does an excellent job of keeping audiences engrossed.

5. Kappela Telugu Adaptation

Kappela, a social drama, follows the story of an unexpected phone call romance between an auto rickshaw driver and a village girl. It’s an expertly-made film with an important message at its core.

However, there are some shortcomings to the film which make it seem tedious at times. Nonetheless, it’s worth watching nonetheless.

The Telugu adaptation of Kappela, Butta Bomma, is expected to release on Netflix next year and stars Anikha Surendran, Arjun Das and Surya Vashistta in the lead roles.

6. Ishaan

Ishaan, eight years old, has an extraordinary talent for art. He enjoys painting, drawing and solving puzzles – but struggles with school work due to dyslexia.

Parents decide to send Ishaan to boarding school; however, the harsh environment at the institution does not seem to be helping him blossom.

He is unsatisfied and contributes little to class activities. When Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) comes to the school as an art teacher, however, all of the students become enthralled by him.

After meeting Nikumbh, Ishaan begins improving his grades and gains self-assurance. Nikumbh’s kindness and patience help Ishaan get back on track in life.

7. Ishtam

First filmed in Telugu as Yemaindi Ee Vela, Prem Nizar’s debut feature Ishtam explores emotions and romance. Vimal, who previously portrayed a rural youngster in films like Pasanga, Kalavani and Eththan, stars as an urbane man in this stylish city-set drama.

Nisha Agarwal, who was part of the original cast, reprises her role here as well. Her chemistry with Vimal is quite good and they complement one another perfectly.

The movie also has an engaging story line, exploring themes such as free will, luck, karmic existence and ultimately death. It’s a captivating film that makes viewers pause before making any decisions.

8. Manikantha

Manikantha is an inspiring drama that depicts a family of wealth, love and respect. The plot revolves around renowned yogi Shankar Swami and his wife Annapurna; Manikanth, their adopted son; as well as Bhagwanti and Mohini, his daughters.

They are a close-knit family and spend most of their time together, whether it be at home in their ancestral home or traveling the world.

Ishtam II is an enjoyable film with an engaging script and stellar lead pair, Ishtam II. Newbie director Prem Nizar has done a commendable job with it, exploring emotions and tapping into modern generational mindsets. Vimal and Nisha Aggarwal star as the main attractions here while Prakash Raj and Tamannaah provide solid support.

The music is top-notch, with Shankar, Eshan and Loy creating some outstanding numbers. Unfortunately, the movie has its share of issues; dialogues can get repetitive at times. Sidharth, Prakash Raj and Tamannaah make excellent leads; their acting abilities are commendable. The rest of the cast also deliver believable performances. Nonetheless, Ishtam II remains an enjoyable watch that tickles many funny bones – making it perfect for family members to watch together too!

10. Ishtam II – Part 2

Ishtam II -Part 2 is an enjoyable comedy with plenty of laugh out loud moments. While the plot may be somewhat thin, Brahmanandam’s performance in his spoof episode is definitely worth watching, while Genelia D’Souza stands as one of the highlights of the film.

The film also deserves special recognition for the IMAX-sized music video it featured. This groundbreaking venture is India’s first of its kind and it certainly made us all swoon! Additionally, this impressive demonstration of visual technology can be watched online free of charge!
